Green Valley | Henderson

Situated within the second largest city in the state of Nevada (Henderson), Green Valley is interlocked with neighborhood parks and beautiful walking trails. Green Valley residents also enjoy an outstanding array of choices when it comes to shopping, casual and gourmet dining, and retail services to suit every need. Green Valley residents are afforded the added bonus of being a convenient 15 minutes from the McCarran International Airport and a mere 15 minute drive from the Las Vegas strip. Spread out over 8,400 acres on the southwest part of Las Vegas Valley, Green Valley has broadened its scope over the years with assorted smaller enclaves cropping up like Green Valley Ranch and Green Valley South.

Like many other cities spread out across the Mojave desert, Henderson (population of almost 260,000 according to the 2010 census) emerged during WW2 as the primary provider of magnesium, deemed the "miracle metal" of the era. The Basic Magnesium Plant supplied the United States War Department with magnesium for incendiary munition casings, airplane engines, vehicular frames, and other parts to aid in the on-going war effort. With the help of local industry, the city of Henderson survived the end of the war in the summer of 1945, being officially incorporated 7 1/2 years later on April 16, 1953.

Things To Consider – With the rental apartments in Henderson's Green Valley area widely recognized as some of the most cost effective in the city, the home designs (mostly built in the 1970’s) offer up quite a diverse and varied mixture of ranch style dwellings in the slightly more upscale range.

Predominantly a residential neighborhood, Green Valley is, as mentioned above, conveniently located next to an international airport to the west while to the east, there’s interstate 515 (Las Vegas Expressway) and immediately to the south lies interstate 215 (Las Vegas Beltway). Plenty of highways serve the community, with State Route 582 acting as the central thoroughfare connecting with Las Vegas to the northwest and Boulder City southeast. The city is serviced by RTC Transit with its network of bus routes that run extensively throughout the Las Vegas Valley along with two nearby airports, Henderson Executive Airport (which serves mostly as a reliever airport) and McCarran International Airport located northwest of Henderson.

Henderson’s received its share of accolades over the years, being named by Money magazine as the 20^th Best Place to Live back in 2006 and a year later as the sixth best walking city in America, ahead of San Diego, California, and just behind Seattle, Washington by Prevention magazine.

Schools - Public education in Green Valley is provided by the Clark County School District (the 5^th largest in the United States with over 300,000 students) which maintains Green Valley High School. Green Valley H.S. is well regarded across the state as having been named the best sports high school in Nevada for more than a decade by Sports Illustrated magazine. Green Valley is also the home of Thurman White Middle School, Greenspun Junior High School, Bob Miller Middle School, and numerous elementary schools.

Well within the scope of the Clark County School District, Henderson currently has 36 elementary schools (top rated Frank Lamping), nine public middle schools (top rated Bob Miller and Del E. Webb), and nine public high schools (top rated Coronado and Green Valley). The city also provides 50 preschools and 33 private schools.

Henderson is also home to a wide range of colleges and universities, specifically Nevada State College (offering academic programs in nursing, education, and liberal arts majors including psychology, biology, history, English, and criminal justice), Roseman University of Health Sciences (a private university which awards degrees in nursing, pharmacy, and business), the College of Southern Nevada, The Art Institute of Las Veags and the Nevada branch of the ITT Technical Institute.        

Attractions - Being one of the first suburban communities off the Las Vegas Strip, Green Valley hosts three large casinos: Green Valley Ranch, Sunset Station, and Fiesta. The casinos are a source of movie theater entertainment, fine dining, and hotels.

There’s also six beautifully kept public golf courses with year-round play, the Ethel M. self-guided Chocolate Factory Tour and Botanical Cactus Garden housing one of Nevada’s largest collections of cacti with over 300 species of plants.

In the heart of Green Valley, you’ll find the District at Green Valley Ranch. With dozens of high-quality shopping and dining choices (Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que, Cheese Cake Factory, Williams-Sonoma, REI and lots more), The District provides a vibrant and diverse mix of entertainment, private residences and public office space – all set within an urban environment, complete with a pedestrian-friendly main street plaza, and a centrally located park perfect for picnics and lounging. There’s even a vintage style Carousel.

Henderson’s got 62 courses (Reflection Bay Golf Club, Anthem Golf Club, Desert Willow . . . the list goes on and on) and more casinos than you can shake a stick at: Rainbow Club, Sunset Station, Jokers Wild, M Resort and Barley’s Brewery and Casino to name only a few.

Businesses - Just off the 95 Freeway south at Sunset Road and Stephanie, you’ll find a large shopping complex including an enclosed shopping mall, The Galleria, with several major department stores as well as blocks and blocks of restaurants, shops, casinos and other businesses, including the largest center of automobile dealerships in the state of Nevada.

Education is also a significant employer in Green Valley (The College of Southern Nevada and Regis University College for Professional Studies which has a campus in Green Valley North), however, with its close proximity to Las Vegas (and casinos of its own), statistics show large numbers of people work in accommodation and food services, as well as arts, recreation and entertainment.

Henderson-based industries include the City of Henderson, St. Rose Dominican Hospital (Siena and Rose de Lima campuses), Green Valley Ranch, Sunset Station, Medco Health Solutions, and Walmart. There’s also four local newspapers and a Fox affiliate television station KVVU channel 5.
